...Baby One More Time — Britney Spears
Why I Bought It: The album went diamond, for chrissakes (14 million sold). That means about 1 in 28 Americans owns it. Everyone else's jaw was on the floor from watching the "… Baby One More Time" video.
Why You Should: This single-handendly caused a pop music revival. However, it is also responsible for the career of Ashlee Simpson.
Only Get One Shot: "… Baby One More Time," with a nod to "[You Drive Me] Crazy"
Oops!... I Did It Again — Britney Spears
WIB: I was 17 at the time. I think I spent the money just to see more Britney pictures.
WYS: Though we couldn't know it then, Britney peaked with this record. Every male with a pulse acknowledged her as the first pick for any respectable Laminated List. And those abs — good golly.
OGOS: "Oops! … I Did it Again," with a nod to "Stronger"
Britney — Britney Spears
WIB: I saw the "I'm a Slave 4 U" video and immediately handed over my soul.
WYS: This is Britney's last shining moment. "Slave," with its Neptunes beat and raunchy video, proved Britney was, well … grown.
OGOS: "I'm a Slave 4 U," with a nod to "Boys"
So Real — Mandy Moore
WIB: I think I fell in love the first time the "Candy" video came out.
WYS: If you want to see where Moore started. There are a few highlights ("Walk Me Home," "So Real"), but it's nothing spectacular. Others during the era did it better.
OGOS: "Candy"
No Strings Attached — 'N Sync
WIB: I'm a sucker for good pop, and these cats perfected it.
WYS: This album is the pinnacle of the pop revival, reflected in the monstrous sales numbers (11 million sold, biggest first week ever). Plus, it made Justin's solo career inevitable.
OGOS: "Bye Bye Bye "
Boomkatalog One — Boomkat
WIB: That Taryn Manning song "Wastin' My Time" off the "8 Mile" soundtrack was dope. And this was only a dollar at a thrift store.
WYS: It's pop-hop the way it should be done. The Black Eyed Peas could learn a thing or two. Plus, Taryn's voice is fantastically weird.
OGOS: "The Wreckoning"
