Words
& thoughts
rise into the evening sky.
That
dusky twilight
where
the light between the clouds
is
caught somewhere between yellow & midnight blue
& ends up pink & orange.
That
hazy view over the treetops
the one that
you could lose yourself in forever.
It is then,
when you are
looking off into the distance
that
time stops
& you can see things in the summer twilight —

you,
bottling fireflies
in the backyard
competing
against your little brother
Those
lazy nights
spent playing night ball with the boys
on the dirt court
when
you could barely see
the basket you were shooting at.
An
amalgamation
of all those summer flings:
the kisses,
the looks,
the rightness of it all
rolled into
one perfect image
& incredible feeling.
Days spent
chilling
in the summer
heat
throwin back lemonade
on the porch
in a
futile attempt
to keep cool
from that
city heat
that not only assails from above
but
takes an asphalt detour,
redoubling its strength
before zapping you in the forehead
& causing you to sweat
from sitting down.

& then
that
frozen moment melts.
The sky is now black.
Night
has come
& the summer twilight
has returned
to the limbo
from whence it came
& you're left
with a scent in the air
that
passes with a breeze
& floats off
into the night,
ephemeral
& transient
& …
&
